Why sensory inclusion matters

When a student’s sensory needs are unsupported, their nervous system does not feel safe and learning becomes more difficult for them and for everyone around them.

But when classrooms are designed with those needs in mind, everything shifts. Pupils feel safer, teachers feel more in control, and the whole school runs more smoothly.

“I've recently completed the Sensory Inclusive Schools core training and it was very insightful and inspiring. Looking forward to implementing some new strategies to help support all the learners in my classroom! Thanks to Sensory Inclusive Schools for providing such informative and practical training for educators!”

That’s because sensory inclusion isn’t about rewriting policies or finding extra hours in the day, it’s about noticing the small things that make a big difference.

A flickering light.
Learning to tie shoes laces.
A noisy corridor.
A rigid rule that doesn’t fit every nervous system.

The Sensory Inclusive Schools Network has been built for busy schools and busy educators.

It gives you quick wins you can use tomorrow, and sustainable improvements that grow with your setting.

Everything we teach is practical, evidence-informed, and proven in real classrooms.

You’ll gain strategies that are easy to embed, low-cost, and rooted in empathy, so inclusion becomes part of the culture, not another item on the to-do list.

By joining the SIS Network, you'll get to:

  • Build a deep understanding of sensory differences and how these support regulation

  • Understand how sensory inclusion supports all learners, not just those with recognised needs

  • Access guidance from leading practitioners and Occupational Therapists with over 30 years experience in the field

  • Implement practical environmental changes that support regulation and make classrooms more inclusive

  • Join a network of professionals who care as much as you do

  • Complete a structured, self-paced online training course covering sensory inclusion in schools

Director of Lifelong Learning and Lead for Sensory Inclusive Schools Beth Smithson

Beth Smithson is an Occupational Therapist and Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner with experience across the NHS, schools, community services, and international NGOs. She began her SI journey while training staff in Vietnam, later completing Sensory Integration Education training in 2016. Beth has applied SI with children with DCD and students with PMLD, and as an NHS OT service manager, she embedded sensory integration into routine practice. She now supports clinicians, parents, and schools in confidently understanding and advocating for sensory integration.

Primary School

“The training was incredibly informative and I loved that it didn’t just tell me about Sensory Inclusion and what it is, it made it really clear how it looks in the classroom and, more importantly, ideas for how we can make changes in school to support children with sensory needs.”

Primary School 2

“I've learnt that some children need support to manage how they process sensory input. Sometimes they need help to take part, whether that’s adapting the room or adjusting how we structure the day. This course has shown me how to make that possible in my classroom.”

Inside the online course

As well as access to the community, drop-in sessions, and a dedicated Occupational Therapist, you’ll also get 11 hours of guided, evidence-based learning, through our online self-paced course. You’ll build a deeper understanding of sensory processing and how to translate it into simple but powerful changes in your classroom.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Support a nervous system that feels under threat by recognising the signs of dysregulation and apply strategies to restore calm and focus.

  • Use the PEO Model (Person, Environment, Occupation) to identify what’s really driving challenging behaviour and adapt tasks, spaces or expectations accordingly.

  • Reframe “behaviour” through a sensory lens, moving from “what’s wrong with the child?” to “what’s happening for the child?”.

  • Build movement and sensory circuits that help children regulate before they reach overload.

  • Create sensory-smart environments that reduce overwhelm and support focus without expensive equipment.

  • Plan sensory breaks and “flight paths” so pupils can step away, reset and return ready to learn.

  • Embed universal sensory strategies that benefit every learner, not just those with SEND.

  • Work with parents and colleagues to build consistent, supportive routines across school and home.

  • Audit your environment using a structured template from classrooms to corridors and communal areas.

  • Monitor and reflect on progress so you can see what’s making a difference over time.
