As the end of term approaches, many families are winding down and getting ready for a well-earned break. But for children with sensory processing differences—and their parents—the return to school in September can be a time of heightened anxiety, not relaxation.

The transition from the flexibility of summer back to uniforms, packed lunches, new classrooms and noisy corridors can be particularly challenging for children who experience the world differently. That’s why we’re encouraging all schools to share the Back to School Sensory Survival Kit with families before the summer holidays begin.

This free, practical guide—created by sensory experts—is packed with easy-to-follow advice for parents and carers. It includes:

  • Tips for choosing sensory-friendly uniforms, school shoes and stationery

  • Strategies for easier hair care and morning routines

  • Lunchbox and school bag suggestions

  • Support for after-school meltdowns

  • Ideas for sensory regulation before, during and after the school day

  • Advice on how parents can advocate for their child’s sensory needs with the school

The guide also links to affordable products and sensory-friendly resources and includes supportive messaging to help families feel empowered rather than overwhelmed.

Why share it now?

Circulating this guide before the summer holidays gives parents the chance to:

  • Try out uniform and shoe options gradually

  • Plan and practise routines without the pressure of an imminent school start

  • Talk to their child’s new teacher or SENCO in advance

  • Access additional support early if needed

By taking a few proactive steps over the summer, families can help reduce the stress of the back-to-school transition—not just for their child, but for the whole class and staff team too.
