Fidget toys are tactile toys that are usually small enough to be carried around in pockets or hands. They come in a variety of textures and can be moved, stretched or squeezed.

When used correctly in the school environment they can help improve fine motor skills and concentration and even help reduce stress

For many students, fidgets are toys that are meant to be played with. Make sure that students understand that fidgets in the classroom are tools to help learning.

Useful rules for fidget use for students:

  • I use fidgets to help me pay attention so that I can learn.
  • I keep fidgets on my desk or in my hands.
  • always put away my fidget when I am done.

Examples of Fidget Toys To Use in The Classroom

Pencil Fidget Topper

These toppers can transform classroom pencils into fidgets. Benefits include developing manual dexterity whilst helping with regulation.

Tactile Tangle

A great tool to help improve focus and reduce stress. Many find the sensation of moving the tangle around their fingers soothing.

Squishy Cubes

These cubes can be squeezed into different shapes and provide proprioceptive feedback. They are also great for developing hand strength and as a bonus, they will not roll off the table.

Stretchy String

Stretching helps develop muscle strength and provides calming proprioceptive feedback. Choosing a fidget with different textures also provides tactile sensory feedback.
