A Sensory-Informed Approach to RSE
3 June 2025
When it comes to teaching Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), most educators are confident in what needs to be covered—consent, boundaries, body changes, healthy relationships. But there’s often less guidance on how to deliver this education in ways that are genuinely inclusive and accessible to all learners.
This September, join us for a live webinar that offers a fresh and practical perspective. Led by Alice Hoyle, a nationally respected specialist in both RSE and sensory-aware education, the session explores how we can make RSE safer, more ethical and more effective by understanding and responding to sensory needs.
Why sensory matters in RSE
RSE is, at its heart, about helping young people feel safe in their bodies and relationships. But for children and young people with sensory processing differences, traditional approaches to RSE may not meet them where they are. They might struggle with interoception (the sense of internal body signals), find classroom discussions overwhelming, or need more concrete, body-based learning experiences.
Alice Hoyle brings a unique blend of expertise and lived experience to this topic. As co-author of Great Relationships and Sex Education and Becoming a Sensory Aware School, she works directly with schools and young people to make inclusive, engaging RSE a reality. She is also a parent carer and educator with a deep understanding of how neurodivergence and sensory needs intersect with personal development and wellbeing.
What to expect from the webinar
This two-hour live session will offer both practical teaching strategies and a wider ethical framework for RSE. Key topics include:
-
How to create safer spaces for sensitive conversations
-
Teaching interoception and body awareness in developmentally appropriate ways
-
Strategies for discussing consent, boundaries, and pleasure with confidence
-
Tailoring RSE content to different communication styles and sensory profiles
-
Approaches to topics educators often find challenging, such as masturbation and sexuality
-
Recommended resources to support further learning
Whether you’re an experienced RSE lead or simply want to feel more confident supporting your learners, this webinar offers ideas you can use straight away.
Please note: Because of the sensitive subject matter, this webinar will not be recorded. Attendees will need to join live to take part.
