In this workshop, we will explore how sensory motor skills and praxis underpin students’ ability to participate, learn, and thrive in school environments. Often overlooked or misunderstood, these foundational skills are essential for everything from sitting upright at a desk to planning, sequencing, and carrying out everyday tasks like writing, getting dressed for PE, or following classroom routines.

We will break down what is meant by sensory motor skills, including postural control, bilateral coordination, balance, and body awareness and how these skills are essential to the classroom.

We’ll then explore praxis, the ability to plan and carry out motor actions, and how challenges in this area can present as clumsiness, avoidance, slow processing, or emotional distress when tasks feel too difficult. Importantly, we’ll consider how students may mask these difficulties or develop compensatory strategies that are not always effective or sustainable.

Using real-life examples and school-based case studies, we will consider how to identify students who may be struggling with sensory motor or praxis difficulties. You’ll leave with a range of practical strategies that can be used in the classroom to support participation and reduce frustration, for both students and staff. We’ll also reflect on how adapting expectations and environments can reduce pressure on the nervous system and promote skill development over time.

Following the workshop, participants will have access to a weekly drop-in session with a Sensory Inclusive Schools Therapist for the remainder of the term. These sessions offer an opportunity to ask questions, reflect on implementation, and receive ongoing guidance as you embed strategies in your setting. Attendance is optional and flexible, designed to support your learning in a way that fits your schedule.
