What Are Sensory Circuits?

Sensory circuits are short, structured movement activities designed to help children regulate their sensory systems so they are ready for learning. A sensory circuit usually includes a sequence of alerting, organising, and calming activities that support attention, coordination, and emotional regulation throughout the school day.  Sensory circuits are widely used in schools and early years settings to help children who may experience sensory processing differences, anxiety, difficulties with focus, or who find it harder to move into the classroom environment. Activities can include balancing, jumping, pushing, and stretching, alongside calming techniques tailored to the needs of the children taking part. When delivered consistently, sensory circuits can help children feel more settled, confident, and able to participate in learning alongside their peers.

What Are Sensory Circuits Used For?

Sensory circuits are used to support children's regulation, concentration, and readiness for learning. They can help children who find it difficult to manage sensory input, sit for extended periods, transition between activities, or feel calm and organised within a busy school environment. Schools often use sensory circuits at the start of the day or after breaks to help children regulate their energy levels and reduce feelings of overwhelm. Sensory circuits may support: - Attention and concentration - Emotional regulation - Motor coordination and balance - Classroom participation - Anxiety reduction - Transitions into learning - Inclusion and engagement in school life Sensory circuits can benefit a wide range of children, including autistic children, children with ADHD, children with sensory processing differences, and children with developmental coordination differences, as well as children who need additional movement and regulation support during the school day.

How Long Should a Sensory Circuit Last?

A sensory circuit should usually last between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the needs, age, and attention levels of the children taking part. The aim is to provide enough movement and sensory input to support regulation without overwhelming or tiring children before learning begins. Many schools find that shorter sensory circuits delivered consistently are most effective. A typical sensory circuit includes: - Alerting activities to wake up the sensory system - Organising activities to improve focus and coordination - Calming activities to help children feel settled and ready to learn Some children may benefit from individual adaptations or additional movement breaks throughout the day. The most effective sensory circuits are flexible, child-centred, and embedded into everyday school routines.

Do Sensory Circuits Promote Inclusion?

Yes, sensory circuits can play an important role in promoting inclusion within schools and early years settings. By supporting regulation, attention, and participation, sensory circuits can help remove some of the barriers that prevent children from fully accessing learning and school life. Sensory circuits create opportunities for children to develop confidence, feel successful, and participate alongside their peers in a supportive environment. They can also help schools build a more understanding and responsive approach to sensory needs across the whole setting. Inclusive sensory support benefits all children, not only those with identified special educational needs. Many children benefit from movement, routine, and opportunities to regulate during the school day. A sensory inclusion approach helps create calmer classrooms where children feel safe, supported, and ready to engage in learning.

How Often Should You Do Sensory Circuits?

Sensory circuits are most effective when they are delivered consistently as part of a daily routine. Many schools choose to run sensory circuits once or twice each day, often at the beginning of the morning and again after lunch or transitions. The frequency of sensory circuits will depend on the needs of the children and the demands of the school day. Some children may benefit from additional sensory movement breaks throughout the day, while others may only need a short circuit before key learning times. Regular sensory circuits can help children develop improved self-regulation, emotional resilience, and readiness for learning over time. Consistency, predictability, and a supportive environment are key to helping children feel secure and included.
